5 SUSTAINABLE FASHION TIPS
Open your eyes, do it daily. Being sustainable might be tricky sometimes, but let us sparkle you with a couple of guidelines you can focus on every day. For a happier life. And a greener planet.
FAST FASHION, MAY I HAVE YOUR ATTENTION PLEASE?
Fashion industry stars may shine bright, but we need to ask ourselves a few questions before we fall in love with this tempting red dress or pair of boots. How was it made? Maybe your dream shirt was born in an enormous factory where workers suffer and tons of toxic waste are released into the wild? Transparency is a timeless value, we don’t want any harm while shopping, we need to take conscious decisions. Choose brands offering sustainable clothing, recycled fabrics, organic and fairtrade cotton or wool. Speak up, ask questions! Follow Fashion Revolution’s hashtag #whomademyclothes and force fast fashion monsters to answer you. Know what you wear and wear it proudly, eco fashion suits you. ;)
Time to officially avoid artificial fabrics such as polyester. This not-planet-friendly substance is made using a chemical reaction involving petroleum, air, water and coal. Factories producing polyester are massive polluters, responsible for ruining the environment, killing fauna and flora and poisoning soils and rivers. Don’t choose nylon, it is made using crude oils and its production releases huge amounts of CO2 to the atmosphere. Viscose, on the other hand, is made of wood pulp and producing it creates horrifying annual wood lodging. Not all natural materials are eco-friendly. Non-organic cotton production creates greenhouse emissions and uses more water than we can spend.
What’s the solution?, you might ask. Fear not, we are here for you. Choose fabrics that are certified as fairtrade and organic. This way you make sure that the process of producing your new garment didn’t hurt any human being, animal, plant, water or Earth in general. Everyone participating was working in fair conditions and paid accordingly. Go for organic cotton, bamboo or industrial hemp. Not only they are eco-friendly, but also feel soooo good on your skin.
LOVE THEM, THEY WILL LOVE YOU BACK
You want your clothes to look good for long, why else would you buy them? Take special care of your stuff, it will pay off. Don’t wash your organic clothes in water warmer than 30°C, don’t dry iron them, stretch them a little after washing. Switch to sustainable detergents, such as soap nuts, which are a fully natural and effective way to get your clothes clean without using chemicals. They are a perfect solution for colorful and black clothes, for white cotton you can use biodegradable washing powder, such us Bio-D. Go green!
A NEW OLD ONE
Do you really need a new dress? Alright, you do, you wore the red one last weekend and everybody has seen you in the purple one like a billion times. But wait… you need a dress, not necessarily a new dress. There are so many clothes that are in good condition and they wish to be worn daily. They wait for you in second hands. In these magical stores, you can find rare crisp vintage items and ridiculously low prices. You can give a new life to cool clothes you find. By buying a second-hand item you show that you care about the planet, as producing fabrics uses tons of water. Avoid buying new stuff, recycle and upcycle!
SWAP AND HAVE SOME FUN
Last but not least, let’s have some fun! I bet you have clothes on the bottom of your wardrobe that you are never going to wear again… Yes, never, stop lying to yourself and let them go! Look for local opportunities to exchange second-hand clothes with other people. Find online groups or clothes swapping events. If you’re in Malta, follow Gazed and join our SWAP x SHOP Facebook group. We promise that you’ll have a blast and find items you’re gonna fall in love with. #Stayathome and swap freely. Nothing is impossible!
Sincerely yours, Gazed
